Blog #10- Reflection

During the semester we have learned about many different critical issues that are extremely important for us as future educators to gain knowledge about. Although I believe that all of these issues are highly critical for me as an elementary teacher, I chose social media/technology as the most important. Over the years technology has increased immensely and now I feel as if it is used more than ever not just in society but in the classroom as well. Considering that technology is used so much, it is important that this it is incorporated into my everyday lessons and that as a teacher I am able to learn about the positives and negatives of incorporating technology in my classroom and really what issues to look out for. I really have gained a lot of knowledge about the use of technology/social media in society and the classroom as well.  https://youtu.be/Z8V91t7kjeA

Blog #9- The Importance of Home/School Connection

Image
Having a home/school connection is extremely important. As a teacher you want to be able to build a trust and relationship with students parents and create that support system. It is always important to maintain a positive relationships with parent. A really important point about home/school connection is involving parents in their children's education. "Those conversations morph into how impressed I am with something in particular that Johnny or Sally did or said, letting the parents see that I really know and care about their child" (Cutler, 2015). Giving parents positive feedback is a great way to build a connection rather than just giving negative feedback. Having a two way communication is vital. Parent conferences, parent teacher organizations or school community councils, phone calls, email or school website are all beneficial ways to keep in touch with parents and parents keeping in touch with teachers. Oftentimes when parents re ceive a phone call home o

Blog #8- Is Technology Benefiting or Destroying our Society?

Image
Over the years technology has definitely increased immensely in our society. Technology use has definitely risen not only in our schools but also in teens and adults as well in the society. Since the pandemic technology has increased in our schools. Technology in the classroom can be extremely beneficial for our students. An article I found talked about Vanderbilt schools and how technology has helped them in their classrooms. "Professor Margaret Smithey guides her students in the preparation of multi-media classroom presentation including clips from the internet, video, audio, and news archive footage. She has opened an e-conference for interns from her courses who want to stay in touch with their fellow students and professors" (Granberg, 2022). This shows a great way how technology can be incorporated in the classroom for not only students but also teachers to connect their ideas. A teacher also had found that he was unable to find a textbook that really captured the

Blog #7- Addiction: The Body's Response to Marijuana

Image
It is known that the dependence on alcohol and drugs is really the most serious national public health problem (Alcohol and Drug Happens in the Best of Families, 2012). A lot of Americans really misuse or are dependent on alcohol or drugs. Addiction is something that many children or even adults may not realize or be in-denial to. Overtime, addiction becomes worse and worse which not only damages themselves but also their families as well. Having an addiction can cause harm and also a lot of stress and confusion to their loved ones. It is important for individuals who have an addiction to seek the proper help and be willing to receive the treatment they may need. In the video "Vaping in Schools" it stated that students using electronic cigarettes has increased. Teens mistakenly believe that vaping has no serious harms. I do believe that a lot of students do it because of peer pressure and just to follow others.                                                    NIDA. 20

Blog #6- How Does Social Emotional/Mindfulness Benefit Our Schools?

Image
In our schools students struggle everyday with Social Emotional wellness and it is our jobs as teachers to make sure that we are keeping an open mind for our students well being. Not only should teachers just meet the academic and social expectations in our schools, they also need to incorporate mindfulness. Perhaps not only do students overall health needs to be addressed, but also our educators as well.                                     M. (2015, April 9). The Value of Mindfulness to Your Business . OnDemand CMO. https://www.ondemandcmo.com/blog/the-value-of-mindfulness-to-your-business/      After watching the documentary "Room To Breathe" it really showed us the behavioral and learning problems that a public middle school in San Francisco had to face and their idea to try something different. Tom Ehnle a 7th grade teacher actually stated that he has sent out and suspended more students than he has ever done before because of how much the behavior is out of contr

Blog #5- How Can We Prevent Poverty/ Homelessness in our Schools?

Image
Perhaps many individuals do not realize how serious homelessness and poverty is in our world and how really how many students suffer from homelessness. A question people may ask is who exactly are homeless students? Homeless students are often defined as students who lack a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttime residence, that is, students living in shared housing, hotels or motels, shelters, and unsheltered places (such as cars, parks, abandoned buildings) (Cai, 2021). In order for us prevent and help students that are going through poverty and homelessness we need to be able to identify students who may be living this lifestyle.                                                                                                               You can help end homelessness in 6 ways! (2019). Lutherwood. https://www.lutherwood.ca/about-us/agency-overview/enewsletter/end-homelessness-6-ways     To start off, in order for individuals to prevent poverty/homelessness, some chara

Blog #4- How Can We Help Mental Health?

Image
Mental health is such an important topic to be talked about. A mental illness is a condition that affects a person's thinking, feeling, behavior or mood. Individuals who suffer from mental health are severely impacted everyday in a negative way. Not only are they affected in a negative way but the people around them are also impacted by this. According to NAMI 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience serious mental illness each year, 1 in 6 U.S. youth aged 6-17 experience a mental health disorder each year and 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24. Mental health is definitely way more common than many people may think. It is important that individuals with mental health issues seek the right help for their specific condition.                                                                                                      Wikipedia contributors.
