Blog #10- Reflection

During the semester we have learned about many different critical issues that are extremely important for us as future educators to gain knowledge about. Although I believe that all of these issues are highly critical for me as an elementary teacher, I chose social media/technology as the most important. Over the years technology has increased immensely and now I feel as if it is used more than ever not just in society but in the classroom as well. Considering that technology is used so much, it is important that this it is incorporated into my everyday lessons and that as a teacher I am able to learn about the positives and negatives of incorporating technology in my classroom and really what issues to look out for. I really have gained a lot of knowledge about the use of technology/social media in society and the classroom as well.

  1. Hi Erin,
I really enjoyed listening to what you had to say in your YouTube video on the use of technology in schools as an elementary educator. I like that you mentioned how prevalent the use of technology is today in almost all aspects of life. I agree that technology and social media can be extremely toxic for children however, I believe that if we show them how useful it can be from a very early age, we can hopefully educate them on the down sides of technology and in hopes prevent it. I think that technology started to become increasingly popular when we were young however, we had to learn how to use it all on our own as it was not around for most of our parents and teachers. I also found it interesting when you discussed the experience you had when observing during which two teachers were debating whether or not the students should be reading textbook notes in the textbook itself or on a Chromebook. As a preschool teacher, I had been noticing how well one of the two year olds could spell her name and all of her other classmates' names. I asked the mother what they are doing at home for her daughter to be doing so well with her reading and spelling and the mother said she does nothing however, the daughter watches YouTube videos all day on her iPad which she learns from. In this moment I first handedly saw the positive effects that technology can have on young children. I also agree that when using iPads or Chromebook's in the classroom, students can become very distracted and will be playing games when they are supposed to be doing work on it. There should be an app or software introduced for these in school tablets that allows the teacher to have control of all tablets from her own and block anything the students should not be working on in that moment. Overall, great blog post/video Erin!

  2. Hi Erin, I really enjoyed watching and listening to your reflection video. Technology was a great critical issue to highlight at the end of the semester, especially because technology has become such an important tool in the classroom! I enjoyed your video because although I already published my debate whether children should be using technology in the classroom, I am beginning to realize how impactful technology can really be. I do not think any child should be on their screens for an extended amount of time, young children with growing minds and bodies can be harmed by the blue light and radiation. It is also important to think about the parents and guardians when debating technology, the child's guardian should always make the final decision regarding the amount of technology they use. I do support technology in the classroom but, to an extent. Reading notes on their tablets or computers can be extremely helpful with slow readers and with learning pronunciation. However, if the notes are very long, I think staring a screen could hurt the students eyes or cause a headache. Proper use of technology is a concern! You did a great job of explaining how technology can broaden a child's learning ability, and I completely agree! I also was glad you included the many ways technology can be distracting, as a substitute teacher I have dealt with my fair share of misbehaving kids who do not feel the need to listen to me. I have learned that the students in my school can be playing games and listening to videos while they are supposed to be learning on iReady or another learning tool. This also connects to proper use and surveillance of technology in the classroom. Great job this semester, have a great summer!
